ABOUT
b. 1998, Co. Meath, Ireland. Based in East London.
Hazel O’Sullivanb. 1998, Co. Meath, Ireland. Lives and works in London.

Hazel O’Sullivan is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the afterlives of colonial collections, Irish mythologies, and speculative forms of prototype and architecture. She works across sculpture, painting, drawing, and digital fabrication to reposition cultural artefacts and visual languages from Ireland within contemporary discourses of exhibition history and display. The interplay of analogue and digital is central to the language of her work, drawing from her alternative epistemological research into the coexistence of religious manuscripts, mythology, and retrofuturism.

Her work employs precision and modularity to merge the languages of abstract modernism with the speculative frameworks of retrofuturism. This combination produces complex and layered works that reflect an uneasy and unsettled sense of the present moment, engaging with ideas of alternative futures and world-building while embedding Irish cultural memory within broader decolonial and art historical dialogues

CIRCA RÉ

THE KERLIN GALLERY
DUBLIN, IRELAND

2025

Working across painting and sculpture, Hazel O’Sullivan reimagines artefacts and art objects within an immersive retrofuturist narrative. Her paintings frequently interpret forts and mechanisms that open gateways to the mythological Otherworld as a way to connect with pre-colonisation. For Circa Ré, O’Sullivan’s sources include medieval and prehistoric objects, illuminated manuscripts, and sacred grounds. Soaking in this trove of archaeological and artistic references, O’Sullivan then manipulates colour, scale and perspective to create architectural compositions that tap into vernacular traditions and mythologies.

Core to the exhibition are a suite of eight modular paintings, Droichead na Sidhe, which interact to form two cohesive images when hung together. For these works, O’Sullivan draws upon decorative medieval folios to develop abstract forms. Rendered with contemporary painting techniques, the paintings become geometric, illusory – using a trompe-l’œil technique to open up spatial perception and depth.

Circa Ré also includes a triptych of three 300 x 250 cm paintings, the largest O’Sullivan has worked on to date. The central panel reimagines an 8th-century Celtic brooch, found in Lagore Crannog, Co Meath, and now in the British Museum. Through O’Sullivan’s transformations, this palm-sized but intricate object becomes monumental in scale, opened up to encompass a universe of its own, flanked by architectural motifs. Irish artefacts also inform three new sculptures, each based on copper alloy discs from the Iron Age, the original function of which are unknown. O’Sullivan renders them into smooth, monochrome device-like objects – as mysterious and otherworldly as their source material.

DROICHEAD NA SÍDHE

FOCAL POINT GALLERY
ESSEX, UK

2025

Railway Bridge Commission
Sat 19 Jul to Sun 19 Oct 2025

Focal Point Gallery is pleased to present our annual Railway Bridge Commission with a new site-specific public artwork by multi-disciplinary artist, Hazel O’Sullivan.

Droichead na Sídhe is a two-part artwork composed of eight individual acrylic paintings on canvas that have been photographed, digitally enlarged and assembled into two banner-scale prints. The compositions are based on intricate folios from illuminated Celtic manuscripts, reinterpreted as embodied form though a painting process that explores space and mythology.

Each component engages with a reductive tromp-l’œil technique, where contrasting tones of colour are placed side by side to suggest space and physical depth. The colours are informed by small chromatic passages from Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300 ‒50 at the National Gallery in London, as a visit sparked by an interest in early perspective painting. This historical technique is reconfigured here to emphasise symbolic form over direct representation.

The title, Droichead na Sídhe (Bridge of the Fairies), references locations in the Irish landscape believed to be thresholds or gateways to the Otherworld. These locations are of historical and mythological significance and lie permanently undisturbed as sites of respect, superstition and caution. This work intends to transform the railway bridge into a physical and symbolic threshold that explores both medieval and mythological visual traditions on its own terms.
