IRISH DISC: UNKNOWN

LEWISHAM ARTHOUSE
LONDON, UK

2024

‘Irish Disc: Unknown’

Hazel invites the audience to interpret the function of the ambiguous disc through writing or drawing on the slip of paper attached to the accompanying clipboards. She encourages you to think about the disc as an ancient, present or futuristic object with a function that could relate to furniture, architecture, personal adornment, religion, or cultural heritage.

The original ‘Irish Disc: Unknown Function’ is currently housed at the British Museum in London and is described as ‘an artefact of unknown function and iconography unique to Ireland’.

Hazel has remade this disc here to critique British ownership of Irish artefacts, and to give life to this disc through public interpretation. She will continue to remake the disc in a range of scenarios to collect a body of diverse data across different locations. She hopes to use this data to build a body of sculptures based on the collected interpretations.
